Job descripton

Lifeguard positions are required to have the American Red Cross certification and pass the swim test – Limit 500m/10min

All lifeguards must attend weekly in-service training. Lifeguards will practice all kind of different scenarios of ocean rescue techniques.

All rookie guards (first-timers) also must attend Rookie school which is going to be after working hours at the beginning of summer (June), rookie school will last 3-4 days approximately 3 hours/day (5.30pm-8.30pm) after working hours and lifeguards are not going to be paid for in-service training.

Wage and housing

WAGE:

Guards: $17.50/hr
Beach attendants: $13.50/hr + 4% commission

Total average summer wage: $12249 (This figure is based on a student survey. The amount depends on the start date, end date, and total number of working hours)

Guaranteed hours: 40/week
Guards: Monday-Sunday 9am-6pm
Beach attendants: Monday- Sunday 8am-5pm

Generally, lifeguards are assigned to a certain location on the beach, and will work there throughout the season. On duty hours, required by the City of Myrtle Beach, are 8am- 5pm, seven days a week.

Uniform Fee: $150 – covers the set of uniforms for the summer. The amount will be deducted from your first paycheck.

HOUSING:

Employer offers temporary and permanent housing for lifeguards. Typically the price of the housing will be $135 dollars per week.

A $200 housing security deposit (non-refundable) is deducted from the first paycheck.

The number of residents in each house varies from 8 to 12 people with 2 to 4 people per room (beds, linens, furniture, basic kitchen appliances, wifi).

Transport and location

How to get to work? Bike, car, walk, bus

Housing is located within 3-5 miles to job site, usually 10-20 min ride.

The only change here is the vans will only pick up/drop off from guard house locations. If participants find their own housing, they must either find their own ride to work or get themselves to a guard house, as if it were a bus stop.

How to get there? ✈ Participants should try to arrive in Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) in the morning and provide the employer with detailed info about their arrival flight.

Pick-up at the airport: Provided from 8am to 6pm

Lifeguard season is March through October. Myrtle Beach is one of the major centers of tourism in the United States because of the city’s warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches, attracting an estimated 14 million visitors each spring/summer/fall.
